Post #17 - Spring is SPRINGING!

We are very much growing from our time in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
Elder & Sister Fournis
We have such fun missionaries on our floor!  Elder and Sister Fournis are from Brittany, France, and are such fun people.  Elder Fournis loves to draw pictures in his daily journal, and Bonnie is often the subject of his pictures, especially as she directs the mission’s “Elijah Choir” each week.
This picture is a drawing by Elder Fournis of one of the choir’s performances.
Here Sister Dolberg is working with some young boy scouts who were there in the library learning about genealogy.  (Sister Dolberg is the one with the red shirt under her blazer.)

We also love the young elders who work on our floor, and we’ve gotten to know many of the other young elders who sing with the choir.  Here is Elder Yowell  with a HUGE greeting for Elder Pocock!   We have so many new friends, and Glen has nick-names for some of them.  Below is Sis. Harmer, whom Glen has re-named “Sister Charmer.”

One sunny Sunday morning in early March, we went for a walk to see some of the older homes near our apartment.  Here’s one of the homes, with such a gorgeous view across the valley to “our Oquirrh Mountains” – where Herriman is located further south in the Salt Lake Valley.

We are standing on the mountain side looking down out over the SLC valley.
We also found the OLD 19th Ward LDS chapel with the smaller 19th Ward Relief Society Building beside it.  This building is quasi-famous.  You can read about it online at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19th_Ward_Meetinghouse_and_Relief_Society_Hall.
This historic building was built in 1896.
On March 5 we went with members of our Social Group to the Public Open House for the new Provo City Center Temple.
It was built from the ruins of the Provo Tabernacle which burned completely except for the outer brick wall in 2010.
This display shows a picture of the horrible fire that destroyed the Provo Tabernacle.

They attempted to keep many of the features of the old building in the decorations inside the temple, such as these posts and the painted decorations.

Sister Dolberg is standing here in front of a picture in the historical display of the Provo Tabernacle.

Today it’s a spectacular building, richly decorated inside.

Note the old paint decorations on the wall of this  “Brides’ Room.” You can “Google” to find more photos of the interior.
Spring has finally “popped up” in Salt Lake City.
Here are some of the beautiful spring flowers that are around the Family History Library.
We love looking at the new flowers each day as we walk to work, noting the changes in the meticulously-tended flower beds.

Here Glen stopped to look at our “next-door neighbor”, a pioneer cabin that is part of the display of the Church History Museum which is next to the FHL.
The gardens on Temple Square aren’t quite at their “peak” yet, but the spring flowers there are getting still more fabulous by the minute - literally!

We always hate to say good-bye to friends when they leave the mission at the end of their 18-23 months of service.  We had to say good-bye to our friend Sandy Rawlins, who was in our ward (congregation) in Stockton for several years.

We also got in on the farewell party for Elder and Sister Sissell, who have both been such a great help to Glen in researching his “Germans from Russia” roots!
It was a yummy birthday party for Sister Dolberg
Bonnie enjoyed a very happy birthday on March 23.  One of the dear sisters on our floor, Sister Bass, surprised her with a huge birthday cake.

It only took about 30 minutes for this large cake, half white and half chocolate, to be devoured!  Brandon, one of the full-time paid staff on B-1, is pointing out HIS piece in this photo! No, he didn’t get THAT much!

We enjoy the day or two a week we get to spend in Herriman on our days off.

The sunrise one particular morning was especially amazing!

It’s hard to believe that we only have four months left before we’ll be HOME in Herriman at the end of OUR mission.  We have some travels planned for fall 2016, and hope that some of you will want to join us!  We’ll e-mail you about our plans.  If you're not interested, just delete that e-mail message when it comes, but do remember that we'd be overjoyed to have YOU come along with us on one or more of our anticipated cruises.
